Moving with Pets, How to Keep Your Furry Friends Happy

Moving with Pets,
How to Keep Your Furry Friends Happy

Can moving really be pet friendly? We think so. Sure, it comes with an additional layer complexity but there are ways to make it work. Ensuring that your pets are comfortable and secure during the move is just as (if not more) important as packing up your own belongings.

In San Diego, with its unique climate and lifestyle, there are specific considerations to keep in mind to create a smooth transition for your furry friends. Here’s how you can keep your pets happy and stress-free throughout the moving process.

It’s All In the Preparation

Two words: Start. Early.

The earlier you begin prepping your fur babies for the big move, the better. Gradually introduce them to the idea of moving by making small changes in their routine and environment.

This can include rearranging furniture, changing their feeding schedule, or even introducing them to a new crate or carrier. However you choose to do it, the goal is to make the move feel like a natural progression rather than a sudden upheaval.

Word of warning though…

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. If you’ve got an oldie but goodie, be patient with them, okay?

Time For A Check Up

Schedule a vet appointment to make sure your pet is in good health before completely changing their surroundings. Update their vaccinations, obtain copies of their medical records, and discuss any concerns you might have about the move.

If you’re moving to a different state or country, you may need additional paperwork or vaccinations, so be sure to check the requirements in advance.

Now, if you’re new to San Diego and you’re expecting to move there soon, there’s some things you need to know:

1. Pet transport

A Certificate of Veterinary Inspection from a licensed veterinarian is required within 10 days of travel, and a rabies vaccination certificate within 30 days. If you're flying, your pet's carrier must meet the airline's requirements.

2. Pet laws

California Penal Code 597.7 states that you can't leave an animal unattended in a vehicle if it could suffer from heat, cold, lack of ventilation, or other circumstances.

3. Pet limits

In San Diego, you're limited to six dogs per household in residential zones.

Keep this in mind when you’re making your way over to sunny San Diego.

Get A Good Game Plan

Plan how your pets will be transported to the new digs. For local moves, you might consider driving them yourself to look out for their comfort and safety.

For longer distances? Research pet-friendly travel options and accommodations.

If flying, check the airline’s policy and prep your pet for air travel by acclimating them to their carrier.

Packing for Pets

This is a no brainer but we’ll say it anyway…

Keep it organized, folks. Pack your pet’s toys and things like you would your own belongings. Services like Juujbox provide moving boxes to pack essentials like food, toys, bedding, and grooming supplies in reusable storage bins that come in a variety of sizes.

Their sturdy construction keeps your pet’s essentials protected throughout the move.

Two more words: Label. Everything.

Another thing that goes without saying but…

Save yourself the headache and label your pet’s boxes so you’re not digging through piles trying to find their favorite chew toy.

Oh, and you might want to prepare a pet travel kit. Pack a kit with all your pet’s favorite must-haves. Include toys, a water bowl, food, a leash, and any medications they need.

Keep this kit accessible so you can grab and go when you need it most.

Moving Day 101: Pet Edition

On the day of the move, things are going to get wild. Designate a quiet, secure area in your current home where your pet can stay. This space should be away from the chaos of packing and loading.

Set up their crate or a comfortable bed and provide them with toys and treats to keep them occupied.

If possible, have a friend or family member look after your furry companion during the most hectic parts of the day.

If you’re using a moving company, inform them that you have pets. Some moving companies offer specialized services for pet owners, including pet transportation and care.

Movers need to be aware of your pet’s needs so they can handle your belongings with care. Don’t be afraid to give them a heads up!

Whether you're driving or flying, keeping your pet calm during transit is essential. Provide comfort items from their familiar environment such as a blanket or toy.

If your pet is the nervous type, use a calming aid recommended by the vet like a pheromone diffuser or an anxiety wrap (yes, that’s actually a thing).

New Home, Same Animal

The second you arrive in your new home, get your furry family member squared away. Give them a chance to explore the area and sniff. That’s just their way of scoping out the place so they can protect you.

Start with one room and slowly introduce them to the whole house. Monitor their behavior and provide reassurance as needed.

Gradual introductions go a long way. It’ll keep them from feeling overwhelmed.

Routines and schedules are an animal’s addiction. So, try to stick to the ordinary day-to-day schedule as much as possible. This means feedings, exercise, and playtime.

Familiar routines provide the comfort and stability they’re so fond of. Plus, it will help them adapt to their new environment.

Settle In So They Can Settle Down

We’re not going to sugar coat it, moving is a big deal for pets. Some will handle it well and some will not. They may need a little extra attention during this time so be prepared to give it to them.

Spend quality time with them, play their favorite games, offer them plenty of cuddles.

Your presence will help them feel secure and loved in their new home.

Once they’re feeling better, get out and explore the neighborhood! Give them a chance to sniff, run, and meet new furry friends.
