How to Find Cheap Self-Storage Near You

How to Find Cheap Self-Storage Near You

Want to find ways to save money on a storage unit? Here are a few tips and tricks to help you save money and find the cheapest storage options near you.

Avoid Storage Directory and Aggregator Websites

A quick search on Google for "cheap storage near me" or "city name + storage" pulls up many results that, without proper investigation, can be misleading.

Storage directory websites spend a lot of money to get their websites ranked as high as possible on Google. From there, they then strike partnership deals with local storage companies to have them show up in their results.

Often they make it seem like they've done the research for you and have collected all the prices from local storage companies for you to see.

In reality, they're only showing you the storage companies with which they have a partnership with and have negotiated a kickback for sending your business to them.

Here's an example of a website that claims to help you find cheap storage in San Diego. Unfortunately, as someone who owns a storage business in San Diego, I can tell you that these are certainly not the cheapest storage units in our town.

Here's a second self-storage directory website that is the same. These are not the lowest storage prices in San Diego.

Use Google Maps or Apple Maps First

Search for "Storage Near Me" or "Storage" on Google Maps or Apple Maps. Doing this will help you quickly differentiate the actual storage facilities in your area from websites that only act as directories. From there, go directly to the storage companies' websites or give their offices a call.

Storage Units are Cheaper After the 7th Day of the Month

If you're not in a rush, wait until about a week into the month before shopping for storage units.

Large storage companies use historical customer data that they've spent years collecting from their customers to their advantage. This data gives them the knowledge of when demand will be higher and when people will be more likely to require a storage unit fast.

We've seen price increases typically happen:

  • Near the end of the month
  • Right before a long holiday weekend (especially Memorial Day Weekend)
  • During Spring and Summer

Find an Alternative to Traditional Storage Units

Suppose you have oversized items that you need to store, like furniture, large electronics, and business equipment. In that case, a traditional storage unit is probably the best option.

But, if you only need to store smaller items to make more space or declutter your home, then on-demand storage like Juujbox is the way to go.

Juujbox acts as an extension of your home, and our goal is to help you quickly store and retrieve your items when you need them so your stuff doesn't end up in the long-term storage graveyard.

Currently, we only provide on-demand storage in San Diego.

    Look for Special Offers

Make sure you check more than one storage facility near you because in some cases, you'll see offers like 1st month of storage free or 50% off your first month of storage.

These offers are usually available at the beginning of the month or if the storage facility has a lot of inventory. That's why it doesn't hurt to check more than one provider in the area.
